run into vs come + preposition

I ran into John in the street yesterday.

My kid's ex-teacher told him that we could use a phrasal verb "come + a proposition(my kid couldn't remember it)" to mean "meet by chance"? Could anybody help, please?

I think 'come across somebody' is also possible.
 
I would use "come across" but probably not for people I just bump into accidentally.

I bumped into John in the street yesterday.
I ran into John in the street yesterday.

I came across a dead body in the street yesterday.
