reject vs refuse vs turn down

Please help me with the following multiple-choice question. Thank you a lot.

"I had intended to marry her, but was (A. refused, B. rejected, C. turned down).

Which one is the correct choice?
 
(Not a Teacher)

All three are acceptable, though B and C are the better answers.
 
When talking about an actual proposal of marriage (ie, when one person says to another "Will you marry me?"), the usual phrase if the other person says "No" is "to turn down".

I proposed to my boyfriend last week but he turned me down.
My mum turned my dad's proposals of marriage down three times before finally caving in and saying yes!
