referring to a journal as an item

Would it be OK to refer to an academic journal as an item (as in 'with the number of academic journals indexed by the database reaching 702 items from 61 countries')?
 
I wouldn't use "item". In fact, you don't need any word there at all. Say "with the number ... reaching 702 from 61 countries".
