Here is another word I heard from one of our "famous teachers" recollect.

According to a "LONGMAN" dictionary it says "old -fashioned". Could I say recall?

Is it still used?

I don´t think it´s old-fashioned at all. You can use either, or remember.

Recollect sounds a bit formal?

It's not about you guys. It's about some teachers at our university! Sorry

No offense taken. I interpreted your comment to refer to your teachers there. :)
I would say that you are correct regarding the formality of recollect. It seems to me that we hear it mostly in TV courtroom dramas, e.g., "Sir, can you recollect the argument that occurred in your apartment shortly before your wife´s murder?"
