1) I read that book two years after I met the author.
2) I read that book in 1984.

Did I started reading it, or started and finished reading it, two years after I met the author/in 1984?

I am assuming that 'two year after I met the author' refers, not to a single day, but to a period of time.
The question is basically the same as: Is it possible that I finished the book three years after meeting the author/in 1985?
I think it cannot.

If you say you read it then I would assume you read it all the way through. Otherwise, say you started it but never got around to finishing it. Or something like that. If you didn't finish it until 1985 say you started it in 1984, but you didn't finish it until 1985.
