re: The 250 most useful British abbreviations, a question

Another useful contribution from Mr Case. I would not dream of quarelling with any of it, but I am a little bemused by no. 150:
mph – miles per hour (still used, despite decimalisation
Living in 'abroad', I was not aware that either distance or time had been decimalised already.

Ahh, yes, you have a point. Will alert Mr C.

Re: The 250 most useful British abbreviations, a question

Not the best way of putting it, but it was an attempt to explain why I put mph in the list despite it being one of the few that is just as common in the USA. Obviously should have written "metric". I've always wondered why with all the changes to the metric system distance remained unchanged.

Living [STRIKE]in[/STRIKE] 'abroad',

Note the above. We simply "live abroad", not "in abroad".

Re: The 250 most useful British abbreviations, a question

I think in abroad was jocular, and relevant given the decimalisation/metric issue. Anyway, it made me smile.

You're right. Apologies. In my haste, I didn't notice the OP's profile or the quotation marks.
