Dear friends,

Below you'll find several sentences where I have doubts about choosing the appropriate word connected with railways:

1) The Railway/Railroad/Rail museum in St. Petersburg is the oldest museum of such kind in Russia.

2) The rail/railway/railroad communication between Moscow and St. Petersburg dates back to 1837.

3) The rail/railway/railroad transport plays an important part in the economy of Russia.

4) The rail/railway/railroad industry started developing in the 19th century in Russia.

Thanks

Say:

The railroad museum in St. Petersburg is the oldest museum of its type in Russia.

Say:

Railroad communication....

And:

Railroad transport....

And:

The railroad industry....

Railway might be more typical in Europe, where British English predominates.

Thanks for your examples!

Could you give me any examples when "rail" is used as an adjective before a noun?

I think you can use "rail transport" in a sentence.

No, that wouldn't work.
