In 2006, the number of new mainland students rose 20% to put us on a path with the United States.

What does "to put us on a path with the United States" mean??

The answers will be appreciated.

Being on a path means you are heading to a destination. Normally the expression is that you are "on a path to" something. Not "with" someone.

I guess they mean wherever the US is heading, they are heading too.

Or they used the wrong word and meant they are on "par" with the US.

Thank you for correcting the sentence. "put on a par" makes more sense. Could you tell me what does it mean?
