Can we say "This proves to be beneficial" (prove in the present simple) or do we need to say "This has proven to be beneficial"? I would guess that if something continues to prove to be beneficial, we can use "prove" in the present simple, but most of the time when we are talking about something proving to be beneficial, it's because the evidence/proof is in the past and thus "proven to be beneficial" is probably better.
