Proper use of the word food and foods

Using the word "food" and then "foods" is a little confusing for me...as I have friends whose first language is not English and I feel these words are misused. Is there a rule or regulation...or irregulations...would love to know.

Food is the substance/stuff that we eat, which generally makes it uncountable, but, for example, different cultures eat different things, which means that there are different sets of food that are eaten. If we are talking about these, then we can use the plural- the cuisines of South Africa + China+ Peru+ Italy = different foods. The same process can be applied to different foodstuffs.
