Please Help me with the grammar-why the writer of the text used "eating"?

"While not common, the Bengal tiger will resort to eating humans, especially if they are unable to process the flesh of the other animals."



Why we should use gerund form of the verb and not the infinitive form of it?
Please help me about the grammar rule in this case.

The phrase is "to resort to verb+ing something".

I had to resort to buying vegetables from the supermarket.
He resorted to reading romantic novels once he had run out of interesting books to read.
The man resorted to bribing the officials to get what he wanted.
