"Please excuse my being so late."

Does this sentence make sense and is it grammatical?

In my opinion it is perfect. It is exactly what I would say on arriving late at a meeting.

What difference do you see between the title sentence and "I'm sorry for being so late."?

I guess the title sentence is a bit more formal.

Thanks in advance.
