Hello friends,

Is there any difference between "dot" and "period"?
Aren't they same mark (.)?

I mean:

"period" = .
"dot" = .

Are they same?

Thank you.

The same symbol is used for both.

The use of "dot" for that symbol came from its use in internet addresses. It is easier to say than "period."

It's always been used in, for example, three dots - ..., and the dot on lower case i.

In BE it's called a full stop.

In maths it's a decimal point.

In musical notation, it's called a dot.

The dots over lower case i and j are also called tittles (though not commonly).

A term which, when it is used, may well be met with rather puerile tittering (probably from me). ;-)

I expect that comment will have its knockers.

If the temperature drops, it may get nipply in here. :shock:

OK, I'll make a clean breast of it. I didn't start the pun war this time.

No, but to continue it was a bit of a boob.

Now you're just milking it.

You and I make a fine pair on this.

Thanks for your support. ;-)

Memo to the OP:

You can ignore the last nine posts, sb — it's just us acting daft.;-)

And that wouldn't be allowed over on WR.

I'd like to buy you all a coffee to say thanks for a morning of fun. What cup size would you like?

Will this coffee be served in the local brasserie?
