Hello,

Can I say there was "a flower canopy" on a "pergola"? Please look at this picture:

012132.jpg

Can I say this about that? Is it natural?

1. We sat under the wisteria canopy grown on the pergola.

2. We sat under the pergola's canopy, ablaze with wisteria.

In 1, you don't need "grown."

In 2, you're saying you were ablaze with wisteria.

Thanks Charlie. Is it better now?

1. We sat under the wisteria canopy on the pergola.

2. We sat under the pergola's canopy ablaze with wisteria. / We sat under the pergola's canopy which was ablaze with wisteria.

Also, can I use "festoon" here?

3. We sat under the pergola's canopy festooned with wisteria.

or

4. We sat under the pergola festooned with wisteria.

You might say:

- We sat in the pergola, under the wisteria canopy.

- We sat under under the wisteria canopy, in the pergola.

- We sat under the wisteria canopy that covered the pergola.

- We sat under the wisteria canopy that festooned the pergola.

- We sat in the pergola, which was ablaze with wisteria.

Be careful not to set yourselves on fire.

Great. Thanks a lot.

What do you mean?

How you can say "in the pergola"? Shouldn't it be "under"?

Isn't the pergola the whole structure? To me it's like sitting in a gazebo.

On the other hand, we sit on porches, patios, verandas, and decks, in houses and lofts, and under roofs and awnings. And we sit both in and on balconies and galleries, depending on whether they're indoors or outdoors. And why do we sit in the yard but on the lawn?

Anyhow, doesn't matter to me. It's probably fine either way. I like in. Let's see if anyone else has an opinion.

What a language.

Do you often go around covered in wisteria? Your sentence leaves out the essential information that it's the pergola which is so festooned.

You don't want to sit in the pergola ablaze, with or without wisteria. See Goes' comment, #8.

I think I might go for on ... as in He kissed her on the pergola.
