Patches a calico cat

Presumably the name is a reference to the color pattern on the cat. Some calico cats have swatches or patches of color with very clear, distinct boundaries. The one in the photo is a bit more mottled, so it's not necessarily the best example of such a namesake.
 
People don't necessarily have a reason for naming their pets.

We had a cat with one eye (he lost the other in a fight with another tom) and half a tail (he lost the other half in an encounter with a motorbike).

When he was a kitten we'd called him 'Lucky'.

I knew a cat named "Boss" who earned his name by being a top cat -- king of the litter.
