He might opt for not to tell/tell/telling.

Which one, please?

Thank you.

"He might opt not to tell" is possible. What is the context?

He might choose not to tell his secret.
he might go for not to tell. Wrong?
He might opt for..... Wrong?

Thank you.

Perhaps;

He might opt not to tell his secret.

(I would not say that, but I suppose it's possible.)

I might say:

He might decide not to tell his secret.

Is "Opt for" wrong in my first message for all the options I gave?

I wouldn't use "opt for" in a sentence.

I will opt for this/that/ orange juice.

Correct?

thanks

Using 'opt for' is only natural if it's a choice between different possibilities.

In your original sentence you could argue that the implied choice is between 'not telling' and 'telling'.

I think, in the right context, that 'He might opt for not telling' would be acceptable.

To opt for is clearly related to the noun option. Learning this might help the OP understand when to opt for opt rather than choose or pick.

1)I opt for orange juice when was offered a choice.
2)I opt for not telling her, even though before thought of revealing my secret to her.

Wrong? Correct?
Thank you.

I wouldn't use "opt" unless somebody held a gun to my head.

It is not wrong but there are simpler and better ways to say it, than using "opt for".
"Opt for" is usually followed by a noun/gerund e.g. "opt for silence/keeping quiet/not telling a secret".

But my option with " I opted for not telling her" was repeatedly corrected to "opted not to tell".

????

Thanks.

That's because "opted not to tell" is better English.
