We are sorry to announce that on October 20th, 2021 Prof. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has died at the age of 87. He spent his last days at home, surrounded by his family.

Should it be "had died" or "died"? (I think that Octorber 20th is in the past.)
 
It should be 'died'. The writer has conflated two ideas:

1. Prof M C has died.
2. Prof M C died on 20 October.

I doubt if many people will get too upset about this. Some won't even notice it.
 
They'd notice if it said 'had died' - that's definitely wrong.
