of course = you're welcome

Could "of course" be used instead of "you're welcome" in conversation?
 
Some people bristle at anything other than the proper "you're welcome" response, but other words are used, from "no problem," to "it's nothing" to "no worries."
 
Could "Of course" be used instead of "You're welcome" in conversation?

I've heard it used, but only in the USA.

Also, an American gentleman once held a door open for me at the gift shop of Yosemite National Park. In response to my 'Thank you', he said 'Certainly'.
 
"Of course" is pretty common in Canada. "No worries" seems to be making inroads lately. I believe that originated in Australia.
