Hello, there was a discussion between some teachers in our class that which way for inserting numbers in an essay is more formal, I wanted to seek your help.

1. Is it more formal to write numbers in our essay with digits or is it more formal to do it with letters from the alphabet?

2. Is there any difference between the numbers less than 10 and the others? Or any other threshold?

3. By the way is the title I selected for the threat OK?

Thanks,

There is no strict rule on this. Most style guides recommend writing out numbers between 1 and 9 alphabetically and writing larger numbers numerically. However, when there is a combination of numbers, most recommend being consistent in the written piece. That would normally be to write all the related numbers numerically.

Your title is fine.

Type writing numbers in the Google Custom Search box near the top of the page. From the fifth entry down you will find links to previous answers to your question.
