Please correct my letter.

Dear sir/madam,
I would like to appear for the upcoming xxxx exam. Therefore please issue me a no objection certificate to appear for the same

Who are you writing this letter to?

This was written by an employee to his manager to get permission to appear for the competitive examination.

Did the employee not know the name of his manager?

Actually it's a formal way to address the higher officials with there designations. I think so

I would use "... sit the upcoming XXX exam" not "sit for the upcoming XXX exam".

I believe "sit for an exam" is used in other varieties of English.
