I will call nearer the time to firm up things.

What does the term nearer the time mean in the above sentence?

(I got this sentence from an example sentence for the phrase Firm up.so, I don't have further context).

It means that the person will call again at a later date, when the date/time of the event is closer.

Today is March 18th.
We have a meeting scheduled for April 20th.
We're not sure what time to have the meeting.
I will call you on April 10th (this date is nearer to April 20th than today is) to finalise the arrangements.

In the above dialogue, you have said you will call nearer the time to finalise the arrangements.
