My friend is busy eating when I called her:

I say: I'll let you eat now. Please call me back later.

IS this appropriate?

My friend [STRIKE]is[/STRIKE] was busy eating when I called her (or "My friend is busy when I call her").

I say: I'll let you eat now. Please call me back later.

[STRIKE]IS[/STRIKE] Is this appropriate?

That's fine. See my amendments in red.

Since your friend is already eating, I would say "I'll let you finish eating".
