[Idiom] maintain a clearance

I just read an instruction booklet fo a welding machine.
I am not sure about the meaning of this sentence:
"Maintain a clearence of between 1 and 3 mm between the nozzle and the
workpiece."

Does it mean " You should keep the distance of 1 and 3mm between..."?

Yes. 'Keep' is clearer and better. I wish writers of instructional manuals (especially ones dealing with potentially lethal equipment) would stop trying to show off by using Big Words.:eek:nfire::)
