Is "main station" different from "central station"? Which would you use more?

That will vary by country and city. In New York, we say Penn Station or Grand Central Station.

The main station is usually the largest station or the one which has the most train tracks. In the town where I live, there are three train stations which all start with the name of the town but only one of them is the main station, which has eight platforms/tracks. The other two are small, with only two or three tracks.

Also, "Central Station" or the central station is usually named for the station in the centre of the city, not the station which is central to the railway network. Perhaps in the past they would always be the same. But today, the main station in a city might not be "Central Station". One could argue that this occurs here in Brisbane, where the main station, Roma Street, is a stop away from Central in the city. (I don't know about Stockholm.)
