I know I posted a similar thread not long ago, but it seems that I have difficulty understanding in what cases omitting with makes a sentence more natural.
'Luce?' he said, the excitement gone from his voice.
I found that sentence on the page below (pre-last paragraph). Can someone explain to me why it is not he said, with the excitement gone instead?
