Is the use of the word "approach" proper and natural in the following context? Is there a better word instead?

====================

Life is an art of distancing and approaching. Distance yourself from those who make you poor, unwise and miserable, and approach those who make you better, economically and spiritually, and happier.

An/the art?

An/the art?

What is the difference between "an art" and "the art"?

(Do you mean the use of the word "approach" is appropriate there?)

"The art of" is standard.

You can say "life is an art", but I prefer "living is an art". It is a general statement.
It is the art of who you choose to mix with. It is a specific statement.
