Good evening,
I wrote a letter of reference for my student who applies for PhD program. I made it checked already twice by a couple of colleagues but if you could be so kind to have a look too, it would really help. Since it is very important for my student, I want this letter to be impeccable in terms of grammar and words choice. Thanks in advance.

Dear Sir:
It is a pleasure for me to recommend Ms XX, who is keen to pursue the Doctor of Philosophy in (name of program) at your esteemed institution.
As the former head of the Department of Oriental languages, I have known Ms XX XX since her first year at the XX University. As part of her program, she took two of my courses: Linguistic and Country Studies, and History of Chinese Language and Introduction into Specific Aspects of Linguistic Theory. XX has been an exceptional student who always demonstrated diligence, preparedness and willingness to know more about Chinese language and culture. She has particularly been interested in etymology and grammatology of Chinese characters and traditional Chinese culture as well.
She first approached me in the end of the second year of her studies about the possibility of writing Specialist Diploma thesis under my supervision. In our first meeting, we discussed the scope of prospect research and she also asked for my suggestions on extracurricular reading in order to extend her knowledge about the topic during summer vacation.
During the research work, Ms XX XX demonstrated the ability to work independently and effectively with creativity and enthusiasm as well as perseverance and diligence. She also proved herself as a curious researcher with attention to details. XX selected numerous descriptions of unicorn-like creatures from 10 sources in classical Chinese, including 《山海经》, 《漢書》, 《史記》, 《春去左转》,《诗经》. At that stage, she amply demonstrated the ability to work with classical texts and make accurate translation from classical Chinese into Russian and English. She also analyzed graphic structure, etymology, semantics and symbolic meaning of characters used to name unicorn-like creatures in selected text fragments. At that stage of research, she displayed the ability to classify and analyze collected data, ability to work with modern and ancient lexicographic sources, as well as ability to develop reasoned conclusions on her own.
Ms XX has been an extremely self-motivated student always looking for an opportunity to present her research findings at local and international scientific meetings. In April 2013 and April 2014, she participated in 51st and 51nd International Students Scientific Conference held by XX University. Every presentation and talk she gave was highly praised by members of the commission. In September 2013, she participated in the 2nd International Scientific Conference of Young Researchers «XXX» held at XX University, was awarded diploma for the second-best conference talk and presentation.
Ms XX has also displayed such quality as competitiveness. In December 2013, she became 1st Prize Winner of 5th International Literary Translation Contest «XXX» organized by Fund for the Promotion of Intercultural Communication and iTrex Translation Agency in Moscow. Her translation of the short story 《XXX》was recognized by the jury as the best translation of prose text. In 2014, she became 2nd Prize Winner of 1st International Foreign Languages Contest (Chinese Language) organized by XX University.
In addition, I would like to mention that during her final year Ms XX effectively combined studying, research work and work at the Department of International Relations in position of translator. This fact speaks volumes about self-discipline and responsibility of this student.
Ms XX is clearly one of the best student that I have worked with in the past few years. She has sufficient research experience and excellent grasp of current concepts in the field due to being an avid reader of scientific literature. I respect XX´s decision to further pursue her specific research interests at your university, and I am confident that she will be a highly valuable addition to your PhD program. Should you have any questions with regards to XX, I will be pleased to answer them.
