'Large number of men' or 'Large numbers of men'?

Please tell me which of the following sentences is correct:

1. Large number of men were watching the football match
2. Large numbers of men were watching the football match
 
#2 would be correct if it ended with the correct punctuation mark.
 
Could you please suggest some alternatives for your username as some people have said that they find it offensive. Post them here and I will change it.
 
Also, grammernazi, note that the word is grammar, not grammer. If you wish to continue on this site, your new username should be inoffensive.
 
Nazis were followers of an evil ideology who murdered nearly all of my family. Grammar purists can be mildly irritating as they correct others' usage. Can you see why equating these groups is offensive?

#2 would be correct if it ended with the correct punctuation mark.

Number 1 would work if you said A large number of men.
