Hi all,

How do you pronounce the words with ~land, /lænd/ or /lənd/? e.g. Maryland, Mainland, England.....etc.

EngFan

It's normally /ə/ for countries ending in '-land'. It can be either for 'mainland'.

The LPD gives only /ə/ for 'Maryland'; the Cambridge EPD gives both forms.

Thanks for your reply. Not only EPD, LPD 3rd also gives /ə/ and /æ/ for Maryland.

Sorry, I missed that.

If you have access to the LPD, why are you asking about pronunciation here?

Good question. Apart from LPD and CPD, I still want to get more references from the native english speakers, like you. By the way, do you think both LPD and CPD are reliable pronunciation dictionaries?

If I have the slightest doubt about whether some particular pronunciation is used, I check with these dictionaries. It would be useful in future if you rephrased your question to ask us if we agree with the LPD/EPD pronunciations, or which of their pronunciations we prefer.
By the way, do you think both LPD and CPD are reliable pronunciation dictionaries?
Yes. Both are first class.
