I emailed John about membership card applications. John didn't know and asked me to ask Mary. If I forwarded the email to Mary, can I say:

John directed me to you for membership card applications.

Sure.

John suggested I contact you about my application for a membership card.

(Are you sure you're applying for a membership card? Usually, we apply for membership of something and then, if the organisation produces them, they send us a card.)

There are some problems with my membership card so I'd like to ask somebody to help me.

In that case, you're not applying for a membership card - you're asking for technical help or you're asking for a replacement card. Just say:

Hi Mary

I'm having some problems with my membership card and John told me you're the person I should contact. Here's the problem ...

@Maybo I guess you mean that John didn't know the answers to your questions. Or that he didn't know how to handle your problem.

I think there is no need to mention who directed you unless you are asked.
