It's difficult to imagine anything coming between them.

This is just a sample sentence from a Collins dictionary. In your native speakers’ eyes, does this sentence indicate that something has come between them?

What word is being exemplified in the dictionary?

Does this sentence mean that the speaker can't imagine that something will come between them?

It means exactly what it says. The speaker's opinion is that it's hard for them (and possibly anyone else) to imagine anything coming between two unspecified people.

To me, it sounds like they are a couple who can get through the worst life has to throw at them.

I would take it to mean that they are pretty much inseparable, probably as a couple, although it could refer to friends.
