You use for when you make a statement about something in order to say how it affects or relates to someone, or what their attitude to it is.

1. I wonder if "excellent experience for him" is a noun phrase and the complement of the verb "be".
2. I wonder if "a pretentious name for a dog" is a noun phrase and the complement of the verb "is"

It would be an excellent experience for him to travel a little.
 
It's possible with 'experience' as a countable noun (with 'an') or as an uncountable noun.
