Hello

Would you please help me understand what "It was riveting television, tribal and raw" mean in this text?

It is from a book by Barack Obama

Here is the text

The city council, once a rubber stamp for Old Man Daley, had divided into racial camps, a controlling majority of white aldermen blocking every reform that Harold proposed. He tried to wheedle and cut deals, but they wouldn’t budge. It was riveting television, tribal and raw, but it limited what Harold could deliver for those who’d elected him.

Thank you very much indeed

Hello.

Would you please help me understand what "It was riveting television, tribal and raw" means in this text? It is from a book by Barack Obama.

Here is the text:

"The city council, once a rubber stamp for Old Man Daley, had divided into racial camps, a controlling majority of white aldermen blocking every reform that Harold proposed. He tried to wheedle and cut deals, but they wouldn’t budge. It was riveting television, tribal and raw, but it limited what Harold could deliver for those who’d elected him."

Welcome to the forum. :hi:

Before we can help you, you need to provide the title of the book. You must provide the source and author of any text you quote if you didn't write it yourself. In the meantime, please note my changes above. Punctuation is very important! End every sentence with one appropriate punctuation mark. Put text you're quoting inside quotation marks to mark it out from your own writing.

I see you asked the same question here.

We recommend posting a question on one forum only initially. If you do not get a satisfactory answer from that forum and you feel that you have exhausted its possibilities, then of course trying a different forum might help. It is only courteous however, to tell the second forum that you have already asked the question on another forum and then give a precis of the answers you received there, or provide a link to it, along with an explanation of why you are now looking elsewhere.
