When someone has a car accident and is lucky to escape serious injury, the Bulgarians usually say it is "the little devil", meaning that it could have been much worse than a few bruises and a fright.

Is there a similar expression in English?

You almost wrote it in the thread's title. We say It could have been worse!

Other idioms for that situation include You had a narrow escape and That was a close shave.

Or "That was a close call".
