Hello, I'm learning english, so I've faced with a problem which phrase of this two is right: 'the word matches its definition' or 'the word is match its definition'?
Assume the first one is right.

You're right. The first is correct; the second is not.

I don't get why do you use here 'the' article instead of 'a'?
 
You're referring to a specific problem. Which one? The problem of not knowing.
