I have to make an assignment in which I have to write a formal e-mail to a professor to apologise for handing in an essay too late and to ask for extra time to finish the essay. My request looks like this:

''Would it be possible to give me a little extra time to properly finish the essay before handing it in?''

However, I am unsure whether this sentence is grammatically correct. Can ''before handing it in'' in this sentence be interpreted as the professor handing in the essay instead of me? How could I formulate this sentence in a better way?

Thank you!

As stated in the forum rules, we don't help with homework or assignments. You need to do this on your own. Good luck.
