this is an essay on Greek mythology in film. I'm using the tale of Pygmalion and Galatea to show the differences between then and now with the movie Ruby Sparks (2012).

Greekmythology has always captured attention of artists around the world,there are many paintings, theatrical productions , and stories basedon the many mythological tales of Ancient Greece. Now in our modernage the fastest way for a story to spread to the masses isentertainment, and with the development of film and the multitude ofvisual effects we now have a new media to interpret and display thesestories to individuals in their own home. Film is a complexmultifaceted way of telling stories that have been around forthousands of years, bringing these stories to life in the way theywould have been imagined by their author or even making them fit intomodern life with very contemporary story lines. Hollywood likes touse Greek mythology because it allows them to recreate a classictale, and sometimes they get it right and some times they do not,many retelling of age-old stories have been twisted to the extentwhere they are no longer identifiable. In the movieRuby Sparks, the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea is bent to fit amodern theme, but the classic theme of the story still remains. Thisis an exceptional example of how Directors can keep the classicalthemes of a story while making them fit a modern context. Rather thana statue coming to life, in the movie Ruby Sparks it is the fictionalgirl the male protagonist has written about. The movie still keepssome of the basic plot points as Pygmalion but makes it into a modernsubject so those who do not know the story of Pygmalion can stillenjoy. This is one of the benefits of Using film, now those who haveseen this film could quickly relate to the story of Pygmalion even ifthey were reading it for the first time. It is the different plotlines keep viewer coming back for more.
