Hello,
I will really appreciate if someone can help me to translate tɚbyʊlns from IPA to English. It is supposed to be a movie title. Iam a homemaker trying to learn English with no native language dependence. I bought a phonetics workbook and I am working an exercise to translate IPA symbols to English. I have done more than 30 correctly, except for this one. I hope someone can help me. Thanks, Diana Torres

The IPA symbol [y] does not represent an English sound. It is close to the sound heard in the French word 'tu' or the German word 'm[FONT=&quot]ű[/FONT]de'. Are you sure you copied the phonetic transcription correctly?

Hello,
Thanks for answering my post. Yes, I write it correctly. There is a stress mark in the ɚ. I hope you can help me. Thanks, Diana

I'm afraid I can't help you. tɚbyʊlns is not a phonetic transcription of any English word.

Based on 5jj's description of this non-English phoneme, here is how to make it: form your lips into a hard and perfect round form and then attempt to say "eeee". You will have a perfect tu connu etc.

Thank you! The symbols represent the title of a movie.

It probably is imtended to be 'turbulence', but it is not a correct phonetic transcription.

This word is transcribed phonemically as:

BrE: /ˈtɜ:bjʊlən[SUP]t[/SUP]s, ˈtɜ:bjələn[SUP]t[/SUP]s/;..... AmE: /ˈt ɝ:bjʊlən[SUP]t[/SUP]s ˈtɝ:bjələn[SUP]t[/SUP]s/ (Longman Pronunciation Dictionary), Cambridge English pronouncing Dictionary)

Note: The symbol ɚ is used by some phoneticians instead of ɝ:

Some dictionaries use their own systems of phonemic transcription:

tûrby[SUP]ə[/SUP]-l[SUP]ə[/SUP]ns (American Heritage Dictionary)
\ˈtər-byə-lən(t)s\ (Merriam-Webster’s Online)
[tʉrbyə ləns] (Webster’s New World College Dictionary)

[SUP]ə[/SUP]

Thank you.:-D Very informative, indeed.

I'm sure you meant: "BrE: /ˈtɜ:bjʊlən[SUP]t[/SUP]s, ˈtɜ:blən[SUP]t[/SUP]s/;..... AmE: /ˈt ɝ:bjʊlən[SUP]t[/SUP]s ˈtɝ:blən[SUP]t[/SUP]s/"
