In the forest/in the woods

Hello.

If I haven't mentioned "the forest" and "woods" before can I use the definite article in my sentence?
"He likes going for a walk in the forest or in the woods."
 
Yes. You're mentioning them as categories of things.
 
Yes, but the second "in" would not be necessary.
 
How about in forests and woods?
 
How about in forests and woods?

I was going to use either "in the forest" or "in the woods". I didn't know they can be used together. I thought they mean the same thing.
 
Forests are generally bigger than woods.
 
Mind you, I grew up near Charnwood Forest.
