'In hopes of doing something...' OR 'In the hope of doing something'?

Hi all,

Are both choices correct? Is there any difference in meaning? (I think I'd once read the first one is more common in AmE.)
 
Both are correct and common and mean the same thing in American English. I doubt that one is more common than the other.
