Have I made any mistakes?

In his autobiography, author Bill Collins admits that the two years he spent in prison for a rape he had not committed, was the worst time in his life. He used his writing as a coping mechanism and an escape from the grim reality of prison, which is harmful for any human being. Although he had suffered, he is at the same time grateful for meeting so many people and collecting so much material for his future books.

Use a stronger adjective than "harmful", for example "torturous" or "soul destroying".

That's one thing about writers that sets them apart from other people. They see anything as a way to collect maternal, giving them something to write about and thus giving it a redeeming value.
