I'm doing an exercise from a widely known grammar book called "A Practical English Grammar. Exercises 2" by Martinet and Thomson and I've come across several interesting sentences about conditionals in which I made mistakes. ;-)

No one bathes here. The water is heavily polluted. If you (bathe) in it, you (be) ill for a fortnight.

To be fully honest with you, I wrote "bathe" and "will be", however the correct variants is: "bathed" and "would be" respectively. Could you explain to me why?

Both are correct.
