Aren't they ready yet? I wish they'd hurry up / hurried up.

What is the real difference between "would hurry up" and "hurried up" in the conversation above. My grammar book says that "would hurry up" is correct because we often use "I wish...would" to complain about a situation. What if I'm not annoyed that they're not ready yet and I'm simply asking. Just out of curiosity. Thus, I don't want to show any annoyance. Is it OK to go for "hurried up" in this case?

With "I wish they would hurry up" you are talking about now. With "I wish they hurried up" you are suggesting that, as a rule, they never hurry and you wish that they did.

I think it could be used in a context like 'I wish they hurried up in the morning so as not to be late'.

I would only use would hurry up.
