I want to say an area is barren.

Is this correct?

As we drove, I looked out the car window. There was an abundance of barrenness all around us, a vast expanse of desolation.

If it is barren, then abundant is not the best way to describe a wasteland.

I think vast expanse of barren land is common. Vast expanse of desolation? Or vast expanse of barren, desolate land?

You could also say a waste of barren land.
