I want to say a carpet is beautiful and colorful.

Is this correct and natural?

The carpet was a sumptuous, silky tangle of swirling shades of gold and dark blue.

When I think of/read/hear "sumptuous" I immediately consider it a reference to food. So, I wouldn't use it in your example. How about "a gorgeous.....".?
