I thought you slept/were sleeping/were asleep

I wrote this dialog:

Woman: You scared me the other night.
Man: I'm sorry.
Woman: You should have called and told me you were coming by. (the man was there to pick up something, so he locked himself in, picked up the thing, and left)
Man: I thought you slept/were sleeping/were asleep, and didn't want to wake you.

Which one of 'slept', 'were sleeping', and 'were asleep' would be more natural here?

Which one of 'slept', 'were sleeping', and 'were asleep' would be more natural here?
Note my corrections above. It doesn't make sense to say he "locked himself in". That means he went in, locked the door and made sure he couldn't get out!

Use either "were asleep" or "were sleeping". I prefer the first. "I thought you slept" is wrong in this context.
