What's the difference between these two sentences?

1. I should've called Jane earlier.

2. I should've called Jane sooner.

Generally, how can the difference between "soon" and "early" be explained.

The only difference I can think of is that I might use ‘earlier’ if I’m referring to the same day and ‘sooner’ if I mean a few days before.
