Which sentence is correct?

I havent' heard from you so long.

I haven't heard from you for so long.

Is 'for' necessary? Is 'for' it necessary in similar sentences with the verb 'write'?

Yes, "for" is necessary.
 
In BrE, we also say "I haven't heard from you in​ so long".
 
In AmE, we say both.
