Hi,

I found the above sentence from SIOCGIFFLAGS: no such device [Archive] - FedoraForum.org,

I think the "shot" in here means "Attempt" : "It was just an attempt in the dark".
Please help me to understand the exact meaning of "It was just a shot in the dark".

"shot in the dark Informal
1. A wild unsubstantiated guess.
2. An attempt that has little chance of succeeding."
shot in the dark - definition of shot in the dark by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia. Can you guess at the probable derivation?

I have found it in my phone dictionary, the meaning of "a shot in the dark" is "an attempt to guess something without having any facts or definite ideas".

Thanks.

Why are moderators editing my posts lately? This never used to happen. I don't like it, especially if no reason is given. I don't even know what was changed, so I don't know if what is left there is what I intended to write.
