I found the above sentence from SIOCGIFFLAGS: no such device [Archive] - FedoraForum.org,

I think the "shot" in here means "Attempt" : "It was just an attempt in the dark".
Please help me to understand the exact meaning of "It was just a shot in the dark".

I have found it in my phone dictionary, the meaning of "a shot in the dark" is "an attempt to guess something without having any facts or definite ideas".

If one shoots in the dark, there is little chance of hitting something. If one hits something (intended), it is a lucky shot.
