How to write a refund letter?

My question is I owed about $15,000 for my college tuition, and I went to the school on June 22, 2012 and paid $10,000 to them. I have found out that want to send the $5,000 to a collection agency. I would actually like to see if I could get a refund for the $10,000 and just pay off the collection agency vs. the school because they would be willing to work/settle with me a better price. I would please like so advice on what I should do or how to write a letter to school asking for a refund check.
